Planning a trip to Hawaii for the first time. HELP?

Hello all!
I am planning a 5 day trip to Hawaii for mid December.
I was wondering if anyone has any tips to offer in terms of hotel, rentals, attractions, etc. and stay on budget at the same time. There are 5 people going on the trip and this will be the first time for all of us so we're a bit lost as planning goes. Any info/advice would be great help. THANKS!

Well, I just came back from hawaii! It was great... ! Surcomstances made it that I stayed on oahu.. Loved it.. I camped all around the island! Then i stayed in hostels.. i didnt find that it was that expensive... Anyway really love the east coast and north shore.. stayed there alot...
